Friday March 3rd marked the second meet of Hawaii’s track circuit for the 2017 outdoor season. The meet known as “MIL Meet #2” took place at War Memorial Stadium on Maui, while Oahu will be having their first meet tonight (the 4th.)
Girls:
100m- Seabury Hall’s Claire Borthwick beat out Kamehameha Maui’s Ani Nitta 13.08 to 13.15 while Mindy Kimura (13.43) and Nanea Estrella (13.63) were not far behind in 3rd and 4th.
200m- Kam’s Ani Nitta was a stride ahead of Kihei Charter’s Maya Reynolds where they finished 27.29 to 27.44. Nitta-who finished seventh in the 200 at states last year-looks to move up in the rankings this season and hopefully earn another medal.
100m Hurdles- Baldwin’s Kaitlin Smith asserted her dominance among the field, running 14.75 to beat out second place Kacy-Lynn Navarro by nearly four seconds (18.05.)
300m Hurdles: Baldwin’s Kacy Lynn Navarro won the race in 50.71. Second was Seabury’s Erika Preseault in 51.28 and Kam’s Keely Logan was third in 56.29.
400m- Sophomore Alyssa Mae Antolin-who finished an impressive third as a freshman at states in the 200 last year-beat Maya Reynolds who is the 2 time state champion in the event. Last week Antolin dominated the meet; being the only one in the 100 and 200 to break the 13 and 27 second barriers.
4x100m Relay: Maui High’s A Team took the win in 53.21 while the B Team from Baldwin came in second in 54.18 and third place was taken by King Kekaulike in 54.43.
800m- With the absence of Seabury’s Ava Shipman-who frequents sub 2:30 and 2:20 times-her teammate Kallalei Ryden (JV) took the win in 2:37.63 over Maui High’s Jules Giron (2:43.21) and Emily Craig (2:45.33) both varsity athletes.
1500m- Ava Shipman of Seabury Hall led from gun to tape as she clinched gold in 5:04.66; lowering her time from last week’s debut (5:08.) Shipman-who holds a PR of 4:45 in the event-was the state champion in 2015 but was beat out in a sprint finish in 2016. Now in her senior year, she looks to win gold once again in her last state meet. Freshman Kallalei Ryden, also of Seabury, placed second in 5:26.86 while Maui High’s Emily Craig was third in 5:36.10.
3000m- Due to the minimal number of athletes competing in the distance events, the girl’s 3k was contested at the same time as the boy’s; meaning that all athletes had to run together.
Again, Seabury’s Ava Shipman dominated the race; running 10:51.54 to finish ahead of teammate Sara Mutzenberg (12:57.95.) Shipman went out strong in a fast pace and stayed with a pack of boys; ultimately beating most of them.
4x400m Relay- The Seabury Hall Girl’s Squad ran a good race where each leg increased the distance between second place. By the end their gap was nearly 75m which allowed them to edge out Maui High 4:24.00 to 4:33.14 while King K was third in 4:53.04.
Long Jump- Baldwin’s Kaitlin Smith jumped 17-09.00 over Seabury’s Claire Borthwick (16-08.50) and Baldwin’s Sela Panuve (16-02.00.)
High Jump- Kamehameha’s Keely Logan, Maui Prep’s Alexa Narayan, and King K’s Charlie Abreu tied at a height of 4-08.00.
Triple Jump- Kaitlin Smith jumped 37-04.25 to win over Kam’s Hunter Logan (34-06.00) and Lahainaluna’s Maygan Patch (34-01.75.)
Pole Vault- Maygan Patch vaulted 9-00.00 for 1st.
Shot Put- King Kekaulike’s Alexis Henderson threw 34-11.00 over Moloka’i’s Sehja Pedro (31-01.00) and Baldwin’s Kayla Maka (30-04.50.)
Discus- King K’s Alexis Henderson won in 111-00 over Sehja Pedro (91-07.)
Boys:
100m- Baldwin High School led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100m dash with Brayden Reys-Sojot out striding teammate Darrian Cremer 11.56 to 11.58 while Andrew Marzan was third in 11.68. This season Baldwin is absent of standout Bailey Kaopuiki who was the only one last year capable of running under 11 seconds on Maui; he is currently training at Mt. SAC.
Missing from the race is Seabury Hall’s Isaiah Payne who frequently finished second in the 100m and 200m to Kaopuiki and also had success in the 400m in 2016 but has yet to make his debut for this season. He will most likely be entered into the meet for next week while his brother Noah finished first for JV and fifth overall in 11.76.
200m- Baldwin’s Rohel Ruiz beat out teammate Brayden Sojot 24.16 to 24.18 while Micah Womack of King Kekaulike was third in 24.21.
110m Hurdles- Rey Cadiz of Baldwin finished first in 15.33 ahead of Maui High’s Ed Ranchez (16.09) and Baldwin’s Michael Rebolledo (17.66.)
300m Hurdles- Baldwin’s Rey Cadiz again came out on top-running 41.13 to win over Ed Ranchez (44.22) and Kam’s Tye Kaleiopu (48.78.)
400m- Micah Womack (King K) won in 54.06 ahead of Kamehameha’s Daniel Kapua (54.53) and Kihei Charter’s Max Mochizuki (54.67.)
4x100m Relay- Once again, Baldwin High School won another sprint event-finishing with a time of 44.95 ahead of Kamehameha’s 45.53 and Maui High’s 46.85.
800m- The boy’s 800m exactly mirrored the results from last week as Baldwin’s Kai Sears led the field to a new PR of 2:10.02-shaving less than a second from his then personal best of 2:10.40. Behind him were Maui High runners Rev Decoite (2:11.90) and Kawika Fernandez (2:12.90) who finished 2-3 last week as well.
Sears-who won the race-is supposedly spending his 2017 season focusing on the shorter events as opposed to last year when he would frequent the 3k more often. In the past month he ran 1:30 in a 600m time trial which set him up for the 800m in the first meet.
1500m- Kai Sears set a 6 second PR of 4:22.18 to win over teammate Tyler Cooper (4:35.49)-who won the event last week in 4:39. Maui High’s Shaye Thorup finished in third with a time of 4:42.43.
3000m- With an absence of competition this week, Maui High’s Dylan Vega led from gun to tape to finish first in 10:37.70: a season’s best from last week where he finished fourth in 10:48. Second place was taken by King K’s Kanai O’Connor who ran 10:45.15 whereas Maui High’s Adam Hakola was third in 10:50.73.
4x400m Relay- Baldwin High School finished first in 3:38.62, while Maui High placed second in 3:40.84 and Kamehameha was third in 3:49.79.
Long Jump- Baldwin went 1-2 in this event as Rey Cadiz jumped 19-04.50 ahead of teammate Michael Rebolledo (19-00.50.) Lahainaluna’s Bailey Honda was third with 18-06.50.
High Jump- Lahainaluna’s Isaiah Tanner jumped 5-10.00 for first to win over Baldwin’s Chayse Tamaki (5-06.00) and Shawn Silva (5-06.00.)
Triple Jump- Baldwin went 1-2-3 as Chayse Tamaki won the triple with a jump of 43-10.50, Christian Reinhardt (JV) finished second in 39-04.00. Third place was Rohel Ruiz in 37-11.50.
Pole Vault- Kamehameha’s Quinn Hottendorf vaulted 13-04.00 for first while Baldwin’s Eddie Omine and Shawn Silva went 12-00.00 and 11-06.00.
